The Grand Tour was considered to be an educational rite of passage for aristocratic English gentlemen in the 17th- and 18th- centuries. They typically travelled through mainland Europe, widening their artistic, cultural, and linguistic horizons. However, as George Gordon Byron was preparing to embark on his trip in 1809, the Napoleonic wars forced him and his companions to avoid the traditional routes, and so he travelled to the mediterranean instead, passing through Portugal, Spain, Sardinia, Sicily, Malta, Albania, Greece, and finally Turkey.
Betty and Pavel present a concert programme that traces Byron’s unconventional journey across Europe in song and piano music, accompanied by readings of Byron’s own poetry.
